Mental Health and Counseling: Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Mental health awareness is so important because it is instrumental in the fight against stigma and also in educating people about resources.

Often times people wait until they are in crisis before they seek help, however, the resources are sometimes available prior to that and unfortunately, sometimes they aren't. This represents the two important sides of mental health awareness: knowing when and where to seek help prior to crisis and how stigma can play a role in access to resources.

This is why it is important we talk about mental health openly, educate people about how important mental health is.

The fact of the matter is that everyone has mental health. Some people may struggle more than others but that does not mean that mental health does not compose part of heir wellness. This is so often overlooked and because mental illness is not something visible we have to talk about it.
